LE03

Introduction
This lecture focused on the types of managers and their behaviors. The managers were classified on the basis of their behaviors a “Theory X and Theory Y Managers”.

My Learning

Theory X : The managers who think that the people working under them are lazy and avoids work provided they get a chance. The only way to make people work is by the use of power and by threatening them. This theory not only proves to be counterproductive in terms of the work done, but also it creates a bad mood inside the firm and the employees start blaming each other without anyone standing and taking charge of the situation.

Theory Y : This theory assumes that the employees are self motivated and are ambitious. A Theory Y manager believes that most people want to do well and excel at the work they are expected to do, given the right conditions. This doesn't mean that such a type of styls wouldn't bring difficulties, but the Y manager tries to find the problem, analyses it and motivates the employees to work accordingly, instead of laying the blame on the employees.

This creates four type of situations:

Situation 1
The employees are of type X and the manager is also of type X. This means that employees are lazy and Manager thinks that his/her employees are lazy. In such a situation, there is little scope for growth for anyone and manger may be held responsible for the failure as he does not motivate his employees to work upto their potential, instead blames his employees for the failure.

Situation 2
In this situation, the employees are oftype Y and their manager is also of type Y. The employees are not lazy but the Manager thinks that employees are lazy. The manager is solely responsible for the failure as the work of the hardworking and self-motivated employees would be wasted because of the poor judgement of the Manager. Consequently, the hard-working employees would loose interest eventally.

Situation 3
In this situation employees are of type X and the manager is of type Y. The employees are lazy but the Manager thinks that employees are not lazy. The Manager has faith on his/her team and constantly motivates them to work upto their potential to ensure that the desired goal can be attained effectively. This manager has a lot of work on his shoulders to motivate the emplyees and bring a change in their life to make a situation that would turn the situation into type 4.

Situation 4
In this situation employees are of type Y and the manager is also of type Y. Both are hardwoking and therefore, it is an ideal situation desired by all firms.

The major learning that happened through this theory was that when the manager is of type Y, the organization is more likely to move towards excellence irrespective of employee being X or Y type. If employees are of type Y, the situation is ideal. But majorly, the manager is the person who drives the organisation.

LE 02

Introduction

Pre-lecture we were shown some small games pieces and models from a freelancer scientist (Not sure; Apologies). The lecture dealt with Excellence which is composed of Efficiency and Effectiveness. Most of the lecture was based on this discussion. The discussion went on quoting exmples of excellence in our lives. Also a valley crossing problem and what learning can we, management students get from it was discussed.

My learnings

Games and models

Dr. Mandi began the lecture, or pre-lecture, showed us some games and models which were made and in a way these models appealed to me. I was amazed to see that in spite of being simple products, these can be a great b-plan idea and i began looking for oppurtunities that how with such a product can i start and sustain a big entreprise. How can children benefit from such products and how can i create value out of these products so that people will come to me and spend some money for buying them. I thought of how schools would be targeted and become a major market for this 'dhandha'.  I then began to think of the gap these simple and products identified and began looking for gaps which can be identified and filled. Then, i brought back my mental presence in the class and put this gap identification on hold to concentrate what was going on in the class.

Excellence=Efficiency*Effectiveness

This was discussed for most of the lecture where Dr. Mandi enlightened us of the theory of excellence which comprises efficiency and effectiveness. Based on what i learnt, Efficiency describes the capability to produce maximum output with a minimum amount of input. Being efficient means producing results with little wasted effort. It is the ability to carry out actions quickly.
On the other hand, Effectiveness is the capability to produce a desired result. When something is considered effective, it is meant to produce a deep vivid impression. Effectiveness involves achieving your goals that support your vision and mission. Therefore this brings us to the Excellence, which is a talent or quality which is unusually good and so, surpasses ordinary standards. Several examples from daily life like apple products etc were also brought to light which made me think and curious about the methodlogy adopted by these excellent product making entreprises.

Valley crossing problem

The sheet which was floated in class taught me the importance of teamwork. It taught me that everyone has got his own strengths and we can take the benefit of other people strengths and collectively work so that effectively and efficiently problems can be solved. It also taught me that even if i can do the work on my own, i must still use the help of others in doing the task as it would provide me strengths which i do not possess and collectively help me in achieving the goal. The importance of feedback also came to light that we must take into consideration other people opinions also and not stick on our own opinion as it can bring out many points which workng alone would not come out.

Conclusion

Alll this added many new ideas and taught me how to be effective and efficient. It, in a way taught me about the path which needs to be taken to follow and fulfil my dream. Also it changed my belief that working together as a group is better than working alone.

Introduction

The class began with Dr. Mandi coming in and instilling values of entrepreneurship in students. The concept of 'Mandi' and 'Hamara dhandha', both well-conducted events by NITIEians was also discussed. The opportunity cost which the students bear while coming to an MBA institute and the expectations out of them were some more points covered. In the end of the lecture, an activity was scheduled for the students and based on bidding, an activity took place with Dr. Mandi teaching us the importance and learning that came out of the game.

My Learning

Instilling entrepreneurship values

Dr. Mandi is a person who is passionate in teaching, mentoring and guiding people. I, being someone, who has a dream of following my dream and not being a part of someone else's dream. To put it in simple words, i aspire to become an entrepreneur and high corporate honcho profiles do not excite me. For somone like me, the teaching had a very pinching effect. I had been taught that money should not be the sole purpose of life and should not be the very focus of our day to day activities. So, normally i would not go to anyone an d talk about earning money. But i learnt to be practical. Economic self reliance is a must and we must not hesitate in speaking about it as money is a necessity. So it made me somewhat more open and be practical.

Mandi, Hamara dhandha

After watching the video i was happy to know that we will be learning heaps and loads  through the organisation of these events. Basically it gave me a sort of deadline to be prepared with a b-plan so as to implement by the time 'Hamara Dhandha' takes place and be open to learning at the very basic level through 'Mandi'. Earlier, i thought that sometime somewhere i have to do something of my own. But now i know that that something has to be thought of at this stage and the time has come.

Opportunity cost

I realised that in the course of two years we would be spending around 7 lakhs and more money would be summing to the opportunity cost because of my decision to join a b-school after graduation. So it is my duty to earn now itself rather than spending bucks on nothing. A sense of seriousness crept in that i am not here for fun but for the purpose of real learning. The figures also made me realise how difficult it is to earn money and how our parents are earning day and night to support a living. Life, after all is serious and once one is serious, one can enjoy the benefits the seriousnes reaps.

Activity

An activity was performed to build a tower out of small cubes. Basically what i learnt was that one must have thorough knowledge of one's own abilities and one must not undervalue or overvalue oneself. When a person is clear of his goal in life, he can benefit the most out of it. I also realised the importance of goal setting as it gives a clear direction to the paths we wish to pursue.

Conclusion

All in all the lecture had a very lasting impact and would continue to ring in my mind time and again as it did bring me face to face with reality.
